Painting Rust Tutorial
- prepared for
SouthAfricanMinis@yahoogroups.com

March 2004

The Garden Pump and Garden Fork used to illustrate this article, were for a customer who was building a very neglected garden. I intentionally damaged the fork to add to the illusion - I was tempted to break the pump handle too, but decided to leave well alone

Materials Required :

Items to be rusted
Gesso or Metal Primer
Black MATT Spray Paint
Burnt Sienna Acrylic Paint
Yellow Oxide Acrylic Paint or Yellow Acrylic Paint
Old Paintbrush - one that can be sacrificed
Fingers

1. Prepare Your Brush

I prefer working with good quality paint brushes as they really do give superior results.

Here I have cut a brush down to make a stippling brush. The bristles are not too soft but rather a little bit spikey

2. Prepare the items to be rusted by painting with gesso or metal primer. If you use metal primer be sure to use the same brand as your spray paint to ensure compatibility - incompatible paints can cause unpredictable results

3. Spray the items with MATT black spray paint & allow to dry
